Fishing mode, in the world of Lowrance, means a set of modes with pre-defined settings designed for specific types of fishing.
Fishing mode only affects the 2D-sonar. In earlier days the main difference was pre-defined settings that the user could adjust anyway, like palette, scroll- and pingspeed. However, in recent softwareversions, Fishing mode also adjusts settings that cannot be adjusted through the regular settings. Lowrance has not been very informative as to what those are, but if you try "Sallow water" in deep water, or "Deep Water" in the shallows, you immediately see that Fishing mode now impacts more than just the settings any user can adjust through the sonar-menu.

It seems that Fishing mode now also affects the ping itself, adjusting the length of the ping and the pre-defined algorithm the sonar uses when it searches for bottom lock. This means that if you use "Shallow Water" in 40 meters (120 feet) of water, your unit will simply not lock on to bottom. The other way around, if you use "Deep Water" in 10 meters (30 feet) of water, the resolution is reduced versus "Shallow Water".
For a user that is able to use the different settings available for 2D, we are left with three of the Fishing mode settings.
- General use - if you don`t want to change mode often
- Shallow water - when fishing in less than 60 feet/ 20 meters
- Deep Water - when venturing way out there and you want solid bottom-lock
